Manley highlights cooperation again

Britain’s ambassador to Spain has once again highlighted the potential for cooperation between Gibraltar, the UK and Spain, irrespective of differing views on sovereignty.

Simon Manly made the comments in response to a question during an interview with the Diario de Burgos, a regional Spanish daily newspaper.

“Spain and the UK have very different legal positions and we are not going to change our position on sovereignty,” he said.

“But there are possibilities for cooperation against organised crime and with Gibraltar’s economic potential.”

“It’s a territory with a vibrant economy next to an area faced with economic challenges.”

The interviewer prefaced his question by suggesting Mr Manley had initially been viewed in Spain as being “tough” on Gibraltar.

He was asked whether he had since softened his stance, prompting his response on sovereignty and cooperation.
