Mr Speaker urges ‘tempered political debate’

Gibraltar’s politicians should strive for “respect, responsibility and dignity” during political debate, Adolfo Canepa said yesterday after being re-appointed Speaker of Parliament.

Mr Canepa was re-appointed withthebackingofbothsides of Parliament, although the

fallout of past clashes with the Opposition was evident during the Ceremonial Opening of the Gibraltar Parliament.

Mr Canepa said he would discharge his duties “without fear or favour” and the hoped the community would hold Parliament in high esteem.

“Accordingly, I want to appeal to all honourable members and urge them to try to conduct our affairs in the House with the respect, responsibility and dignity that befits the mature democracy that we are and that, lest we forget, took so many years of sacrifice and struggle to achieve,” he said.

“I suggest that honourable members owe it to this community to temper their language whenever debate becomes overheated and concentrate more on the substance, thereby raising the standard and quality of parliamentary ex- changes.”

“Perhaps honourable members should reflect on the fact that the turnout at this last general election was around 10% lower than in the previous three general elections.”

“I think that the electorate is conveying some message to you all.”
