New Christmas ‘Cookies’ stamps

Gibraltar has issued a set of six Christmas "Cookies" stamps. The colourful set has been designed by local graphics designer Stephen Perera with the theme "Christmas Cookies".

Modern Christmas cookies can trace their history to recipes from Medieval Europe biscuits, when many modern ingredients such as cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, almonds and dried fruit were introduced into the west. Leaving cookies and milk for Santa took off as a holiday tradition in the 1930s, during the Great Depression.

In that time of great economic hardship, many parents tried to teach their children that it was important to give to others and to show gratitude for the gifts they were lucky enough to receive on Christmas. Over the years, many children still continue the tradition and in Gibraltar leaving out cookies and milk for Santa is part of our children’s Christmas celebrations.
