The Ombudsman’s Office today celebrates its 20th anniversary with a reception of Public Service Ombudsmen from Malta, England, Scotland, Ireland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

Today marks 20 years since Parliament enacted the Public Services Ombudsman Act 1988. This was shortly followed by the establishment of the Office of the Ombudsman.

Former Ombudsmen Henry Pinna and Mario Hook, and current Ombudsman Dilip Dayaram Tirathdas, have looked back on the work of the office over the past 20 years.

“It’s a great feeling for me to be the Ombudsman who is in office at this point in our history and to be able to celebrate this anniversary marking these 20 years of good work,” Mr Dayaram Tirathdas told the Chronicle.

“I am confident that there will be many more years of good service to be provided by all those who have the honour and privilege to serve in the Ombudsman’s Office in the years to come.”

Through all these years the Ombudsman’s aim to ensure the public are treated fairly and with respect has remained the same.

Gibraltar will be hosting the semi-annual Public Sector Ombudsman Group meeting tomorrow to celebrate this anniversary.

A special 20th anniversary postage stamp has also been issued to mark this event. The first 50 annual reports collected by the public from the Office of the Ombudsman will include one of these special issue postage stamps.
