Picardo and Franco talk Brexit

The Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, together with the Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Joseph Garcia, yesterday met with the Mayor of La Linea, Juan Franco, at No. 6 Convent Place to discuss a joint strategy to avoid the potential negative consequences of Brexit.

Mr Picardo said later that Gibraltar and La Linea shared common objectives.

“We must ensure we can guarantee free movement across the frontier and the continuation of Gibraltar as the economic engine for the whole area to uphold the jobs and prosperity of Gibraltarians, other residents of Gibraltar and of the Campo Area citizens who work on the Rock,” he said.

The Mayor of La Linea expressed his satisfaction over the meeting and asked the Campo Area to remain calm because: “The Chief Minister had expressed the commitment to maintain jobs for frontier workers which were of total priority.”

Juan Franco informed Mr Pixcardo of the steps being taken to ensure the whole area obtains benefits out of the situation, the Gibraltar Government said in a statement yesterday.

Both politicians emphasized the “excellent” understanding between them which helps when they need to meet urgently as may be required.

The common objective is a joint strategy for mutual benefit and they will continue to hold further meetings to work together, the Government said.
