Proceeds of stadium will go towards other sports, Govt says

The sale of Victoria Stadium to the Gibraltar FA has raised £16.5m that will now be re-invested on other sporting facilities in Gibraltar, No.6 Convent Place said.

The Government, which welcomed the GFA plans unveiled last week, said it had worked closely with the association to persuade UEFA to use this site for the development of Gibraltar’s first national football stadium.

It was responding after the GSD also welcomed the plans, which it said were in line with proposals it had suggested for Victoria Stadium soon after Gibraltar joined UEFA.

At the time, both the GFA and the government were focused on other sites, including Europa Point.

Last week, the government insisted that the “significant difference” between its work and the plan proposed by other parties at the last election was that the final deal had generated £16.5 million of government capital revenue.

“I wholeheartedly welcome the GFA’s announcement of the plans for Gibraltar’s new national football stadium, which is the result of months of hard work by Minister for Sport Steven Linares and the GFA in negotiation with UEFA,” said Chief Minister Fabian Picardo.

“I am proud that by bringing football in Gibraltar to a modern, professional level we will also be able to invest £16.5 million in the development of other sports in Gibraltar.”
