Rogers and Baglietto win the "Mountain Race" Trial run
Although there were no trophies to lift or medals to be had Arnold Rogers and Kim Baglietto maintained their dominance in Gibraltar’s road racing competitions claiming their respective first place finish in a test run of the Mountain Race - Top of the Rock Run this Sunday.
As the association prepares for the big event later this June when they will host the Small States European Championships, they held a trial event of the Rock Race.
This was a 6.5km race taking on the long very steep incline to the Top of the Rock and downhill back to the Lathbury stadium.
Starting at 8am from Lathbury Stadium with congregation by Lathbury Stadium track Start Line as from 7.30am, it was a unique race with participants first completing some laps with the stadium before heading out onto the main route.
Arnold Rogers was to lead from the start closely followed by Andrew Gordon.
Arnold was to finish with a time of 26.46/05 closely followed by Andrew Gordon with a time of 27.13.35, with Leon Gordon just thirty seconds behind and Daryl Vassallo also closely following.
Youngster Finley Cant was to finish with a very respectable seventh place with a time of 31.55.51. One to watch out for the future.
Kim Baglietto was to claim the women’s title finishing eighth overall with a time of 32.31.43, Karyn Barnett two minutes behind.
The third female across the line was Abi Evan with a time of 38.48.50.
The race has approximately 2.5 km of incline, some of them steep, and the rest with some level sections and downhill to the finish line. The downhill stretch making it even more challenging for athletes after an exhausting uphill climb and required to pace themselves. On arrival at the stadiums athletes complete 300m on the track to the finish line.
