Spain backtracks on Gibraltar hockey ban
The Spanish Sport Council (Consejo Superior de Deportes) has eased its ban on Spanish hockey clubs competing against Gibraltarian clubs.
José Antonio Gil, General Secretary for the Spanish Hockey Federation (RFEH), broke the news this weekend in an email to Carl Ramagge, Gibraltar Hockey President and Marijke Fleuren, European Hockey Federation President.
“We are very pleased to inform you about the current situation with Gibraltar. After a meeting with Spanish Sport Council (Consejo Superior de Deportes), the Spanish’s clubs have the authorization to participate in any friendly matches or competition with Gibraltar’s clubs in Spain or outside our country,” he said in English.
However, Mr Gil said in the email that Spain still ‘cannot’ participate in any official competition or match against Gibraltar.
“Players, umpires and others with British passport from Gibraltar can obviously participate in our official Spanish national competitions with the same conditions given to any other European citizen,” he said.
