Statues, trees, tables and chairs at DPC

Tuesday’s meeting of the development and planning commission saw approval granted to a number of applications including a monument to women, trees, tables and chairs and commercial signage.

Permission was granted for the installation of a monument to women on the existing King’s Wharf Roundabout.

The monument is based on the design that won a competition in 2013 to create a piece that commemorates women.

The application for the installation of office signage for Abacus Financial Services, 5 Crutchett's Ramp was granted permission. The signage was allowed based on the fact that Abacus occupy the majority of the building and other businesses would therefore not seek to have their signage erected also. Abacus will have to arrange for the signage to be removed should they no longer inhabit the building.

The proposed relocation of 23 Palm Trees, removal of 45 trees and planting of 45 new trees in compensation at Four Corners,  Winston  Churchill  Avenue, received a recommendation to replace trees at a rate of two for one and not like for like. A Government project only seeks advice from the DPC and cannot be forced to comply with its wishes.

Still on trees, the unauthorised removal of an olive tree at 9 South Pavilion Road will be dealt with in the courts.

Angered members of the Commission were adamant that the person who removed the tree without permission should be brought before a judge under the Trees Act.

It was alleged by the homeowner that the tree was diseased, however, he has been unable to provide evidence to agree with this analysis.
