UN sets up permanent presence on Rock with UNCTAD Centre of Excellence

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development [UNCTAD] will set up a Centre of Excellence in Gibraltar, conducting training, analysis and research in customs and international trade.

Expected to open in April or May it will be based at the University of Gibraltar and will be permanently staffed by a team of four funded by UNCTAD.

The move represents a significant development and means that the Rock will regularly host visits from top-level international and UN officials.

Education Minister Gilbert Licudi made the announcement yesterday, emphasising just how significant the move was not just to the university but to Gibraltar as a whole.

UNCTAD is a United Nations body with its permanent Secretariat in Geneva responsible for dealing with development issues, particularly international trade – it offers its member states expertise on all issues related to investment and enterprise development with its focus on custom matters and international trade, analytical research, technology and trade development.
