Winning photographer captures ‘a nation in an image’

The photographic competitive exhibition, ‘Our Gibraltar,’ was officially opened yesterday at the John Mackintosh Hall.

The exhibition was opened by the Minister for Culture, Steven Linares, who together with Miss Gibraltar Kayley Mifsud presented awards to the top five entrants.

First prize went to William Anthony Williams with a piece titled ‘A view of our own’. Mr Linares congratulated Mr Williams for managing to “depict the whole of our nation in one photo.”

Explaining how he captured the image, Mr Williams said: “I took that photo quite a few years back, I think it must have been four or maybe five years ago when I had been into photography for no more than a year.”

“One of my friends, who happened to live on one of the top floors in Ocean Village, invited me over for coffee and when I saw the spectacular view I just had to take a picture of it,” he said.

This is the first time that Mr Williams has entered the competition and he described winning it as “overwhelming” and “unexpected”.

Second place went to Jonathan Mañasco for his piece, ‘Ghost of Christmas past’ – a night time shot of Main Street’s Christmas lights.

John Piris was awarded third for his image called ‘Standing out’; fourth place was awarded to Dylan Infante for his ‘National Day celebrations’ shot and fifth prize went to Nicholas Lee Ferrary with a piece titled ‘Mother and child’.

The event was also attended by the Governor, Lieutenant General Edward Davis, who took the time to view each photo entry and speak to the entrants.

The exhibition is organised by the Gibraltar Photographic Society in collaboration with the Gibraltar Cultural Services on behalf of the Ministry for Culture.

It will be open to the general public from Tuesday 23rd August 2016 to Friday 9th September 2016, weekdays from 9.30am to 9.30pm.
