Another Alboran earthquake prompts fresh warnings
Spain’s civil protection authorities issued a new warning yesterday following another significant earthquake deep in the Alboran basin on Sunday.
The latest quake at 5.25pm on Sunday measured 4.5 on the Richter scale and was felt in many cities in Andalucia, particularly in the provinces of Almería, Málaga and Granada.
It followed the 6.3 quake last week, which caused damage in the north African enclave of Melilla and was felt in Gibraltar and across much of southernmost Spain.
Spain’s National Geographic Institute said it had registered a total of 960 aftershocks since January 25, of which 25 had been felt on land.
Most of the tremors are under the surface of the earth deep out at sea in the Alboran basin.
