Mediterranean Dance School success at Barcelona

Mediterranean Dance School recently took part in the Barcelona Dance International Award during the Easter weekend, a competition coordinated with the Italian Grand Prix of Dance.

A group of 34 dancers travelled to Barcelona during the Easter weekend with a total of 18 choreographies competing amongst various styles including contemporary, modern and lyrical. With 20 years of experience, the event saw a total of 15 countries culminating in what was a truly multicultural event.

“This competition was a first of its sort for us as normally dancers compete individually in order to gain points for their ultimate prizes,” said Director of the school Genyka Celecia.

“However, the beauty of this was that you participate as a school in order to collect points for your country within your registered categories. Awards were then given to the schools as a whole within categories.”

“In many competitions, as a teacher it is heartbreaking as not everyone can achieve the top awards especially after all students work so hard. It was remarkable to see that all 34 dancers felt like winners as the they had all played an equal role in accumulating points for their school”

The competition played out over four evenings with the judging panel finalising the award ceremony on the last day.

Mediterranean Dance School achieved:
Top major Gold award for Best Overall Dance School of the Competition
Top Gold award for the school with the highest marks in the Lyrical category.
Silver Award for the school in the Contemporary category
Bronze award for the school for the Performance category.

Director of the school Genyka Celecia explained,

“This has been a magnificent opportunity for our school,” Ms Celecia said.

“I think it’s important to create opportunities for all who want to compete abroad, as often, not everybody gets the chance to and this competition felt perfect.”

“The theatre was of high caliber; with large fully equipped changing rooms and excellent professional lighting technicians. These technicians worked specific lighting techniques for each piece on the day of our rehearsal on stage.”

“We were extremely proud when the president of the competition felt that he had to commemorate Gibraltar MDS team for their attendance and success- in his opening speech of the Prize Giving Ceremony. As our first time attending he felt like he had to put Gibraltar on the map to the theatre’s spectators. All in all, this was a very rewarding experience.”
