Monument to Women unveiled

The Monument to Women was unveiled by Justine Picardo yesterday on the 50th anniversary year of the Gibraltar Housewives Association today known as the Gibraltar Women’s Association. It was back in 1966 when a group of pioneering women formed the association on the Rock.

Architect Ruth Massias Greenberg and sculptor Ermelinda Duarte spent six months creating the monument constructed on the Mid-Harbour Roundabout.

The idea behind the sculpture is that the shapes of women cut out within the structure will create different shadows throughout the day.

Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and Minister for Equality Samantha Sacramento attended the official launch where Mrs Picardo gave an address.

“The monument depicts three women symbolically representing the Rock of Gibraltar,” Mrs Picardo said.

“They change form depending on which angle the sun is beaming. It’s a symbol of strength and versatility. Just like Gibraltarian women. Able to adapt to any situation that life throws at us. But, just because we are erecting a monument to women does not mean that the movement is over.”

“It does not mean that we, as women, have achieved all that we have to achieve to gain true equality. There is still a lot to do and there is still a lot to accomplish.”

“Women still need to be encouraged to break the glass ceiling.”

Mrs Picardo also spoke of the inequalities of maternity leave, the sexualisation of women and respect towards women.

“Just because we do not live in an oppressive society does not mean that the search for equality for women in Gibraltar is over,” she said.

“There is still a lot that needs to be done, and we women, and men, need to continue our campaign and endeavour to get there. Let this monument serve as a constant reminder of that.”
