Gibraltarians will be urged to champion EU membership in the run-up to the UK’s referendum on whether to leave the European bloc.

The Gibraltar Government has already stated publicly on many occasions that it backs Prime Minister David Cameron’s efforts to keep the UK within a reformed EU.

But Chief Minister Fabian Picardo has called on the community to rally round the cause of EU membership, adding that Gibraltar can exert important influence despite its small size.

Speaking to the Chronicle in his new office at No 6 Convent Place, he said the Rock will seek to form part of “a concerted and joined up campaign” in the UK.

"And I hope that is something we will be able to form part of together as a community," he said.

"It will involve all political parties and people of all persuasions making the case for Gibraltar and also people beyond the political parties."

"The important thing is not just for the usual advocates for Gibraltar to make the case, but also for ordinary Gibraltarians to make the case."
