Plans filed for major cable car revamp

MH Bland has filed a planning application to rebuild the Cable Car, one of Gibraltar’s top tourist attractions.

The company is seeking permission to demolish the existing upper and lower cable car stations and the three towers. It hopes to replace them with a new station building, two towers and a new cable car system.

The design of the top station reduces the visual impact of the building on the Rock’s skyline, even though it is bigger than the existing structure.

Gibraltar has previously had two cable car installations, one in the 1800s and the other in 1966.

But with tourist numbers increasing, the current capacity of two cabins with room for 25 persons is not enough to meet demand, leading to long waits and a potentially negative experience for visitors.

“The Gibraltar Cable Car is well known around the world and is often on the to-do list for any visitor, but it currently doesn’t have the capacity to properly serve the needs of Gibraltar’s growing number of visitors,” the company said in a design statement accompanying the application.

“In order to increase the capacity of the Cable Car installation, a complete re-build is necessary including the Lower and Upper Stations.”

If permission is granted, works to rebuild the facility will be carried out at the Signal Hill Upper Rock station, the Grand Parade Lower station and at the Upper Rock intermediate towers.
