Stadium lighting rigs raise questions over music festival venue

Victoria Stadium home of Gibraltar football

New permanent structures installed at the Victoria Stadium have raised questions as to where the MTV Presents Gibraltar Calling Music Festival is to be held this year.

The festival is billed by online ticket site “festicket” as taking place at the Victoria Stadium.

But the Gibraltar Football Association has during the past week begun installing new structures which will accommodate new lighting systems required for the international qualifier matches Gibraltar will be playing at home.

A spokesman for the Gibraltar FA confirmed that “…the structures will remain there permanently during the duration of the qualifiers.”

The new structures, six in total, reduce significantly the area around the stadium.

The GFA spokesman said the structures are part of a new lighting system which aims to meet UEFA requirements so that home matches can be hosted in Gibraltar.

The new system will provide the correct luminance required for broadcasters to adequately cover the matches.

An inspection of the installations will be undertaken by UEFA officials to ensure that the requirements are met before the final green light is given to use the Victoria Stadium.

The GFA was unable to confirm whether the music festival would be held at the Victoria Stadium.

A Gibraltar Government also declined to confirm the venue for the festival but said additional details would be released soon, perhaps as early as today.
