Think before sharing, RGP urges public

The Royal Gibraltar Police has urged the public to “think beyond the return button” before sharing video footage of criminal activity through social media, highlighting the potential negative impact this could have on future trials.

This follows the recent widespread sharing over social media and messaging platforms of a string of videos depicting criminal activity.

While this is an issue that is by no means isolated to Gibraltar, the small size of this community can compound some of the problems it raises, including ensuring that the rules of a fair trial are adhered to.

In an interview with the Chronicle, Superintendent Wayne Tunbridge urged the public to think before sharing or forwarding such material.

Mr Tunbridge said: “Some social media sites have so many followers and with such a small community it means that quite a large percentage of the community could possibly see those videos or photos.”

“That has a couple of knock-on effects on an RGP investigation because people comment, and people may start throwing names around, which could hinder our lines of investigation.”
