Hound Dogs and College 1975 share first points in scrappy start to the league
Hound Dogs 1-1 College 1975
It was somewhat of a scrappy first ten minutes to the start of the Gibraltar Football League, with Hound Dogs unsettling College 1975 and showing that, even without the big changes the Green and Whites had made to their squad, they were ready to challenge for the early points of the season.
College 1975 started to settle down when in possession, moving the ball around with short passes and beginning to push the All Blacks of Hound Dogs back into their half.
A near-empty stadium greeted the start of the Gibraltar Football League, although this was not much different from the previous season when the two sides had played against each other.
As the match approached the 20-minute mark, College were beginning to show some quality in midfield, but Hound Dogs were standing their ground solidly and taking the game back to the Green and Whites.
Soler, however, had to make just one intervention, clearing the ball from outside his box.
In the 23rd minute, Hound Dogs, through Ethan Perez, sent a long-range shot just wide of the target.
College’s first real threat did not come until the half-hour mark, when a ball floated into the penalty area saw the Hound Dogs goalkeeper fumble at first before he was able to collect it under pressure.
Hound Dogs gave the ball away moments later, conceding a corner which ended with a header going over the crossbar.
The match, although far from an exciting encounter, did have the bonus of little of the time-wasting seen in previous seasons, with players rolling around after fouls. The new rules introduced across the sport this summer limit players’ attempts to waste time, particularly at throw-ins. However, without ball boys, the far side was still a long walk to collect the ball, with players having to cross the length of the training pitch to resume play.
Hound Dogs’ next attempt at goal came in the 41st minute, but it was a weak effort which bounced into Soler’s arms.
A scoreless first half was greeted with quiet calm.
The second half started with the physios having to step in after a harsh challenge left a College player needing treatment following a long, rugby-style punt forward.
It was Hound Dogs who saw the first attempt of the second half, but their effort was blocked by defenders after three minutes.
A minute later, College sent a floated free-kick into the goalmouth, where it was collected by the goalkeeper.
College tried to pile on the pressure in the 54th minute, with a ball into the penalty area eventually being scrambled into the hands of the Hound Dogs goalkeeper.
Pressing high, College were penning Hound Dogs into their half, although they were wasting opportunities.
As the match reached the hour mark, the lack of effective distribution to the front men on both sides continued to limit the number of goal-scoring opportunities.
As the match entered its final 20 minutes, little had changed, with neither side making any real headway in breaking the deadlock.
The closest either side had come came in the 72nd minute, when a header from a corner floated to the far post was sent well over the crossbar.
With nine minutes remaining, College brought on Peacock.
Although there was a little more urgency, the finishing was still lacking. In the 84th minute, College, after weaving passes from the halfway line into the goalmouth, saw the ball bobble weakly past the wrong side of the post.
It was a missed chance they were to regret.
Hound Dogs responded with a quick break, which saw the ball headed down by a defender into the path of Dafalaih, who had just come on as a substitute. The Hound Dogs player picked his spot and put the ball past Soler to break the deadlock.
Two further missed chances by College 1975 saw their hopes sink further as they entered the final minute of the official 90.
College, who had looked on paper to be one of the dark horses of the 2026/27 league, were once again dropping points against Hound Dogs, as they had done last season.
The tensions rose, with several yellow cards shown to both sides as off-the-ball pushing and shoving gripped the final minute.
College piled on the pressure and somehow scrambled the ball into the goalmouth. With three players running for the ball and just a defender in the way after the goalkeeper had been beaten, they managed to push it over the line to equalise.
Entering injury time, College saw Hound Dogs push forward, with the College skipper receiving a red card for a dangerous lunging tackle.
Just moments later, in the next passage of play, it was the Hound Dogs goalscorer who received a second yellow card, also leaving Hound Dogs with ten men.
With tensions now high, the players confronted each other and had to be separated as the game appeared to lose all control.
With play resuming, there were just a couple more minutes of chaos on the field before the referee finally whistled for the end.
College had salvaged a point with their late equaliser.
