Gibraltar backgammon teams in London for World Championships

The Gibraltar National Backgammon Team will once again represent Gibraltar at the World Team Backgammon Championships, which are being held in London from August 24.

The Backgammon Association of Gibraltar is sending two national teams to the event.

One team comprises captain David Frier, Gilbert Licudi, Mike Nicholls, Michael Pitaluga, William Danino and Carlos Ruiz.

Gibraltar’s women’s national team comprises captain Nadine Chipolina, Natalie Passano, Marcelle Licudi and Anastasia Antoniadi.

This will be the 11th year Gibraltar has competed at the World Team Championships, which are expected to attract a record 28 countries, including teams from Japan, Australia and the United States.

Mike Nicholls, Chairman of the Backgammon Association of Gibraltar, said: “It is a proud moment for Gibraltar backgammon.”

“Gibraltar may be one of the smallest countries taking part, but we have always enjoyed competing on the world stage and occasionally upsetting some much bigger nations.”

“With our best performance internationally last year, and a record field expected in London, we are looking forward to flying the Gibraltar flag once again and hopefully giving everyone back home something to cheer about.”

The Backgammon Association of Gibraltar thanked the Gibraltar Sports and Leisure Authority for its continued support and Saccone and Speed for this year’s financial contribution, which it said helped make Gibraltar’s participation in the championships possible.
