RGP warn about phone scams

The Royal Gibraltar Police are notifying the public of two separate phone scams and encourage people to ignore, hang up, or delete any fraudulent phone calls of messages.

The first of the two scams is in the form of a text message that reads ‘call me’ and includes a phone number attached.

The number is registered to Nauru, a tiny island in Micronesia, northeast of Australia.

“Calling the number shown will direct you to a premium number that will probably keep you on hold and charge you very high rates, leading to you ending up losing valuable pre-paid credit, or worse still, a huge bill,” a police statement read.

The RGP advise the public to delete these messages.

In the second scam police are warning about a phone call scam whereby fraudsters call up posing as computer technicians.

The ‘technicians’ will then try to gain information in order to be granted access to your computer.

Police advice is to end the call as quickly as possible without sharing any personal information.
