Commander joint forces command commendation for airfield ground support unit

A team from British Forces Gibraltar has been formally recognised in the New Year’s Honours List 2019.

The Airfield Ground Support Unit, Royal Air Force Gibraltar, a team of 13 locally employed civilians, has been awarded a Commander Joint Forces Command Commendation for its outstanding contribution to the operational output of the Forward Mounting Base.

The Airfield Ground Support Unit is responsible for the advance preparation of the unique airfield at Royal Air Force Gibraltar, sweeping all airfield surfaces to ensure a safe operating environment, free of foreign object debris, for all aircraft operations.

Of particular note, was their tenacity during Headquarters British Forces Gibraltar’s support to Operation RUMAN, the hurricane relief effort in the Caribbean Islands.

Wing Commander John Kane, Station Commander Royal Air Force Gibraltar, commented “The Airfield Ground Support Unit team play a vital role in ensuring the Air Safety of Royal Air Force Gibraltar for both military and commercial aircraft operations.”

“The team have an excellent esprit de corps and take utmost pride in their work. Their selfless approach, flexibility, drive and professionalism is extremely commendable and they thoroughly deserve this excellent recognition from General Sir Chris Deverell”.
