Cortes tours power station site

The Minister for Energy, Dr John Cortes, visited the ongoing works at the site of the new power station at the North Mole.

Most of the piling is now complete and construction of the separate chambers that will house the new engines is well underway.

Jean-Franciois Conci of Bouygues, the French firm awarded the tender for the power station, showed Dr Cortes round the site and gave a summary of work so far and the project as a whole.

Dr Cortes was accompanied by the CEO of the Gibraltar Electricity Authority (GEA), Manolo Alecio, as well as by Michael Caetano of GEA, the Government’s Chief Technical Officer, Hector Montado, and GEA Board member (and former City Electrical Engineer), Tony Aguilera.

“We were all pleased to see the work progressing well on what is clearly a very well run operation,” Dr Cortes said.

“I was particularly impressed at the safety elements being introduced, including the highly reinforced walls on the separate chambers for each of the six engines.”

“It’s an exciting project that will be of tremendous benefit to Gibraltar”.
