Dance showcase ahead of world competition in Italy

Local dancers dressed as pirates, frogs, belly dancers, and historical figures showcased months of hard work at a three hour long presentation ahead of the International Dance Federation World Championships 2016.

The dancers gave it their all, performing a variety of dance genres to an audience of applauding supporters. The team of around 30 dancers will be travelling to Brixen, Italy on May 23 to represent Gibraltar at the world championships.

The show held at the Sunborn provided the audience mainly comprised of family and friends, a preview of the pieces the dancers will be performing at the world championships.

“It is very special for the children, young adults and older adults to show their nation the pieces which will be representing Gibraltar [in Brixen],” said GIDA President Anne Marie Gomez.

The team performed pieces of hip hop, dance show, fantasy show, and belly dance. Within these styles, the dancers performed as soloists, groups, duos, and in formation.

“For us it is really important because we do very well when we go abroad in the fantasy dance section, and it is important that Gibraltar sees the standards that we take,” Mrs Gomez said.

“There are nearly 70 Gibraltarians coming to Bellaria with family and supporters, but it is very important for extended family and friends to see the work and sacrifices that the children make, usually they are training on weekends and it is important that people see what they are training for.”

GIDA Vice President Zuleika Green added that the dancers auditioned for the event in early November, and have been working hard since. The 30 dancers are poised to present 70 pieces in front of the judges at the five day event.

Looking ahead to the world championship later this month Mrs Gomez said, “It’s for dance lovers who like a challenge.”
