Danza Academy students receive their exam results

Danza Academy recently celebrated its traditional examination certificate ceremony at the Convent Ballroom.

The certificates were presented by Governor Lieutenant General Edward Davis who praised the Academy for the excellent work produced over 27 years.

The Governor commended Danza for training so many successful students who have made it to top universities and vocational dance schools .

Lt Gen Davis highlighted Professional Ballerina Janice Felices, Simon Anthony Bolland, currently working in the ‘Fame’ UK tour and Jonathan Lutwyche, semi-finalist in Britain’s Got Talent.

The Govenor thanked Danza for always hosting Gibraltar’s flag well high at international championships and cultural events.

Over the years Danza has produced I.D.O. and I.D.F. World and European Dance Champions, Sussex Festival Winners, Capezio Dance Championship semi-finalists and Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalists.

Recently Danza has been awarded a slot on the ‘Move It’ main stage in London’s Excel Centre and performed over the weekend amongst top UK dance schools including Vocational Institutes and celebrity dancers .

This year at the Certificate Ceremony Danza wanted to celebrate exemplary past and present student achievements and for the first time the Academy awarded cups.

The Janice Felices Cup was awarded to Gianella Ochello; The Jonathan Lutwyche Cup to Anna Hernandez; The Simon Bolland Cup to Sebastian Diaz; The Nicola Dewar Cup to Robyn Bugeja; The Angelina Haveland Cup to Aaron Carrasco; The Erica Mc Grail Cup to Gabrielle Mc Glashan; The Claire Mc Grail Cup to Searie Mc Glashan; The Ileana Martinez Cup to Charlize Buhagiar and The Kayleigh Halmshaw Cup to Rebecca Benggio.

At the ceremony Anne Marie Gomez awarded a cup to Yolanda Cortés and Zulieka Green awarded a cup to Eva Doherty.

Danza Academy students took over 200 exams in early June.

The Academy students achieved a 100% pass rate with merits and distinctions.

Classical ballet students as young as two and a half took the pre-school Assessment Class and exams were taken up to the last Grade 8.

Students also took the Intermediate Vocational exam.

In the Classical field 30% of students achieved Distinctions awarded to students who achieve 75% marks and over.

Some 80% of Modern students achieved Distinctions, awarded to students with over 80% of the marks.

“We are so proud with our student’s results,” said Danza Director Anne Marie Gomez.

“Many took three exams and some took up to five. These exam results reflect the commitment of the dancers and their supportive families. Many of the candidates returned from the International Dance Federation World Dance Championships and within a couple of days took the ballet exams.”

“A couple of days after this the Modern exams were taken and three weeks later the whole Academy participated in the staging of an amazing production ‘A Whole New World' at the Alameda Open Air Theatre. We are privileged that everyone takes dance so seriously at the Academy and that examiners with such wealth of knowledge come to report our achievements.”

“The Academy for the first time in Gibraltar will be introducing exams from the Spanish Dancing Society under the expert guidance of Beran Parry.”

“The Academy will also be introducing acrobatic exams. Exams place a great responsibility and discipline on students who learn loads of life skills. We have a host of students currently studying in top UK vocational schools and some working professionally.”

“They have all grown up doing these ballet and modern exams. We like our students to get rewarded accordingly so we usually issue the certificates at this ceremony at The Convent. It is important to celebrate our dance achievements and we are truly grateful and would publicly like to thank the Governor for his kind inspirational words.”
