Freeman Andrew Mackinlay pays tribute at ‘Gibraltar on the Somme’
Gibraltar Freeman and former Labour MP Andrew Mackinlay laid flowers at “the strong point" at Pozieres, on the Somme, which was captured by the Australians on July 26, 1916, and which they have referred to since as "Gibraltar".
“I am so pleased that the name Gibraltar is featured in this hallowed ground and commemorates the brave soldiers of Australia,” Mr Mackinlay said.
This strong point was discovered and excavated as recently as 1992.
Alongside it is the memorial to the first Australian division.
