Gib ‘cannot be in EU’ after Brexit, Rajoy says

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has told the Wall Street Journal that Britain’s exit from the EU offers Spain an opportunity to push its sovereignty aspirations over the Rock.

In his first interview since his re-election, Sr Rajoy said Gibraltar would not be able to carve out separate deals to maintain access to the bloc.

“It’s impossible for Gibraltar to be in the European Union if the United Kingdom leaves the European Union and if there are no legal changes,” Sr Rajoy told the newspaper.

Gibraltar would only be able to remain part of the EU if the Rock accepts Spain’s co-sovereignty proposal, he added.

Publication of the interview coincided with a meeting between Sr Rajoy and Michel Barnier, the European Commission’s chief Brexit negotiator.

The two men met in Moncloa yesterday to talk about Brexit, although few details of the content of their discussions were released.
