Maria Dolores celebrates 100 years

Local woman Maria Dolores Povedano celebrated her 100th birthday earlier this week.

Maria who is commonly known as Lola is in relatively good health and said she has been able to live so long due to eating the good stuff “you no longer find nowadays.”

According to family members Lola would still be cooking for family and friends were it not for her failing eyesight and her legs giving way during the last few years.

She is a proud British Gibraltarian after moving to Gibraltar from Cortes de la Frontera when she was just 17 years old.

A tea party was held at the Rock Hotel to celebrate the centenarian’s birthday and was attended by Government Minister Dr John Cortes. Governor Edward David sent Lola flowers and a personal message on behalf of the Queen.

Chief Minister Fabian Picardo also sent Lola a personal message from him and his family.

Lola’s current hobby is to keep tabs of her son, three grandchildren, four great grandchildren and nieces and nephews via her mobile phone.
