Parliamentary clash over £24m marina

The Gibraltar Government has defended the £24 million cost of the new small boats marina in the face of Opposition criticism that the project had cost the equivalent of £37,000 per berth.

This follows a series of tense exchanges between the Government and Opposition in Parliament on the subject, which at times drew the intervention of the Speaker, Adolfo Canepa.

During Friday’s question and answer session, GSD MP Lawrence Llamas asked if the Government intended to publish a list of the owners together with details of the vessels registered to each berth and the annual rental income payable at the marina.

Paul Balban, the Minister for Traffic and Transport, told Mr Llamas that publication of such lists would breach data protection legislation.

This drew immediate flak from the Leader of the Opposition, Daniel Feetham, who firstly slammed the £24 million cost of the project to the taxpayer, which he said amounted to £37,000 per berth.

He also questioned how providing such data could breach data protection rules and queried if this advice had come from the Attorney General’s chambers.

“It is the view that has been taken by the Government,” replied the Minister responsible for the project, Gilbert Licudi.

“It is £24 million well spent,” he insisted.
