The Together Gibraltar team started to collect signatures for a petition to push for a consultative referendum on Gibraltar’s abortion laws.
As part of the #LetsGiveThemAMandate campaign, which began with an online petition last week, members will stand outside the Piazza every Monday throughout the summer.
A spokesman for Together Gibraltar said: “The group’s official stance on the abortion issue is pro-choice, however within the group there are multiple interpretations of where the limits to choice should lie.”
“For this, and for the fact that the issue is a delicate and emotive one, we believe a consultative referendum would empower politicians to bring progressive change in a way that is mandated and socially acceptable by the majority of this community.”
Independent MP Marlene Hassan-Nahon, who founded Together Gibraltar, said a consultative referendum in Gibraltar will be a “useful tool” to see where society lies on this debate.
She added: “We are not trying to reinvent the wheel here. We are just trying to give women autonomy over their bodies.”
