RGR Band hosts student open evening

The Band and Corps of Drums of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment recently invited students from the Gibraltar Academy of Music and Performing Arts to an open evening.

The event took place at their new purpose-built band block in Devils Tower Camp.

Bandmaster, WO1 (BM) Matt Simons, gave the brass and woodwind students from the academy a detailed history of military music before the band performed a selection of music from their ceremonial repertoire.

Following the band performance, the academy’s students and teachers including Principal Christian Santos and Vice-Principal Cathy Bachelor, joined the band for a rehearsal session.

WO1 Simons said he was delighted to welcome the students to the open evening and is keen to welcome all budding musicians to their future events.

He said: “It was a pleasure to both perform for and rehearse with the students. It gave us the opportunity to really showcase military music and highlight the career options available.”

“We want to support and nurture musicians of all ages and abilities within Gibraltar and one of the ways that we can achieve this is through our community open evenings.”

“We have a number of events planned throughout 2016 and would like to encourage anyone who is interested in music and perhaps joining the RG Band, to come along and see for themselves what we have to offer.”
