Seaweed invasion could lead to Western Beach closure

The Gibraltar Government has warned it may have to close Western Beach because of the seaweed invasion.

As reported in the paper yesterday, beach goers are giving Western Beach a miss due to the mass amounts of seaweed swept onto the shoreline.

But while the Government said it was “assessing the situation”, it added that there was only so much it could do.

“This natural phenomenon is affecting the Bay as a whole and, indeed, the wider region,” it said.

“The strong sea conditions are washing the seaweed ashore in considerable amounts.”

“No sooner had we cleaned up last week's accumulation, than the shoreline was once again covered by substantial amounts of seaweed.”
