‘The Jesse Tree’ wins Rock on the Rock Singer/Songwriter competition

Gibraltar’s burgeoning young music talent took to the stage at the Rock on the Rock club last week in the club’s well-established Singer/Songwriter competition.

Contestants were required to compose two originals and pick one cover to perform in front of four judges selected from different music backgrounds.

Jesse Mclaren, adopting the stage name ‘The Jesse Tree’, took the ‘Jay Alman’ first prize with his two originals ‘The Dream’ and ‘Home’.

Second prize went to Cherie Morgan for ‘Nada Mas’ and ‘Dime’, and Patrick Murphy’s ‘Rebellion’ and ‘Little Alley’ helped him grab third spot.

The Musician of the Year award was given to Jason Belilo and the night also provided entertainment from last year's winner Tim Garcia alongside local band Afterhours.

“The event went as smooth as ever,” said event organiser Alan Alman, “There was a great reaction from the crowd and music in Gibraltar is progressing at an alarming rate which is very promising.”

16-year-old Kristian Celecia and Rima also complimented the show with more original tracks to further suggest that Gibraltar has a bright music future.

Mr Alman said that the Rock on the Rock club will commence a programme in Gibraltar’s schools in the New Year to encourage more youngsters to pick up an instrument or take to the mike.

“We want to start junior open mike nights for 15 to 16 year-olds next year,” he said. “I know there are more young musicians in Gibraltar and there is a lot of talent out there.”
