Unite the Union conference in Brighton

Unite the Union is holding its biannual Policy Conference in Brighton this week.

Attending the Conference is Gibraltar Area Activist Committee Chairperson Christian Duo in his capacity as Executive Council observer.

The Gibraltar branch of Unite the Union presented a motion at the Policy Conference on Brexit calling for Gibraltar to be included both in the transitional and final EU/UK exiting agreement.

“The Gibraltar delegates also supported a statement by the Executive Council on Brexit that had a reference on Gibraltar which will become the policy of our Union and stated it supports the right of Gibraltarians to determine their own future and therefore the right to self-determination,” said a Unite representative.

“Both Gibraltar branch speakers were highly praised for their interventions. Both motions were carried.”

The Gibraltar delegation had the opportunity to meet a number of influential speakers at the Policy Conference. Speakers that included Labour Party leaders Jeremy Corbyn and Union leaders like Len McCluskey.

“The opportunity is being used to raise awareness at a political and trade union level of how a hard Brexit can affect the economy and welfare of ordinary working people in Gibraltar,” said a Unite representative.

The conference is billed as the single most important event for the union as it is when elected members are brought together to make the policy.

The agenda is composed of motions presented by committees and branches to guide the workings of the union for the next few years.

The delegates attending the conference on behalf of the Gibraltar Branch of Unite the Union are Anne Smith, convenor and equalities chairperson and Alex Nunez, executive member and youth chairperson.
