Chess is ‘inspiring generations of Gibraltarians’ - Picardo

Tradewise Chess Festival 2016 Chief Minister of Gibraltar Hon Fabian Picardo + Masters Round 3

Chief Minister Fabian Picardo yesterday thanked all the players of the Gibraltar Masters of the Tradewise Gibraltar International Chess Festival for “inspiring more generations of Gibraltarians to think about the sport of chess”.

His words came at the start of the third round of the tournament yesterday ahead of an interview on the festival website streamed live to thousands of chess players around the world where he spoke of Gibraltar being the home of chess in January and February every year and where “Gibraltar opens its doors to the people of chess”.

Mr Picardo, told interviewer International Master Tania Sachdev, that Gibraltar was being inspired by the number of people who came to the festival year on year. Local children in particular, he said, were seeing how “this thing called chess” attracted hundreds of players to visit Gibraltar and that they too are being inspired to look at chess and to understand why they should take an interest in it.
