After chess, Caleta turns to world backgammon

Around 250 backgammon players from all over the world are in Gibraltar for the biggest ever international tournament to be held locally. There are 15 local players in the tournament amongst them the Rock’s Education Minister Gilbert Licudi.

Out of the 250 players over 150 players are professionals in the game. The total prize fund is in the region of £90,000 and is established by the number of participants. The winner will take home in the region of £20,000.

This event-led tourism project sees the Government of Gibraltar as the main sponsor together with the Caleta Hotel which is also sponsoring the event in its own right.

The commitment initially is for a three year period with the aim of Gibraltar bidding to host the European Championship in 2018.
