Marrache art collection up for sale

The joint liquidators of Marrache & Co are seeking offers for a collection of hundreds of prints and paintings seized following the collapse of the local law firm.

The collection has an incalculable heritage and historical value and includes paintings by some of Gibraltar’s best-known artists, including a significant number of works by Jacob Azagury.

Among the artworks are paintings by other local artists including Gustavo Bacarisas, Leni Mifsud and Willa Vasquez, as well as a signed print by Salvador Dali and original works by the well-known 18th century maritime artist Francis Swaine.

The Chronicle was granted access to the collection as the liquidators invited offers from potential buyers.

Alongside the paintings is a collection of prints and maps of Gibraltar dating as far back as the 1700s.

There are views of the Rock and of people here and in the Campo, including an early lithograph of female smugglers and an original mid-19th century plan of Gibraltar that stretches from floor to ceiling and includes details of the Spanish lines.
