Basketball - Bavaria Blue Stars bag three youth titles

Bavaria Blue Stars’s boys and girls were in festive mood last week, both their Under 13 teams and the Girls Under 16 winning their respective League Championships.
The latter had already made sure before their final match against Lincoln Bayside but, nevertheless, both teams engaged in a spirited, hard fought battle, to a background of loud support from an appreciative crowd. Neither team was able to open a comfortable advantage throughout, with the winning 3 points in a 39-36 scoreline to BBS coming from the free-shot line. The two best players on the day, Isabelle Dalmedo 23, and Lucia Hernandez 14, led the scoring respectively for BBS and LB.
Medals were presented by Senior Women’s National team coach Luis Romero.
Bavaria Blue Stars had also clinched the U13 Boys title before the last match against closest rivals Damex Gators, who won 54-43. Julek Wojniak 24 and Matthew 14 led the winners while the Champions’ Ben Lejeune and Jack Balban hit 11 points each.
Medals were presented by GABBA Secretary General Antoinette Sanderson.
The U13 Girls League, however, was decided in the last match, and what a battle royal it turned out to be. BBS subjected Damex Gators’ free-scoring prodigy Daniella Martinez to a vice like marking and this went a long way towards their eventual success. DG took the first quarter 13-8, but BBS narrowed the gap to 17-15 by half-time and won the third quarter 10-6 to start the last quarter 25-23 up. Daniella led the match with 17 points but did not score in the last quarter, the final buzzer going with BBS 35-33 winners, their top scorers Brylee Costa and Beau Reyes with 12 points each.
Medals were presented by GABBA Executive Committee member Lizanne Andrews.
