CM’s meeting with the Mayor of London reflects close historical bond between Gib and London

Chief Minister Fabian Picardo yesterday held a “friendly and warm” meeting with the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan. Mr Picardo told the Chronicle he was confident Mr Khan had clearly understood the similarities between the positions facing both London and Gibraltar, and the many difference there are between these positions.

The Mayor, he said in an interview following the meeting, had clearly understood the affinity at a human, historical and professional level.

“He understood that the Financial Services in London and Gibraltar were very closely linked in how they had worked in the past and in the challenges that lie ahead,” he emphasised.

The discussions with the Mayor reflected the historic links generally with the Rock and in particular the strong commercial links with the City especially evident today in the field of Financial Services.

The meeting had been arranged to discuss the synergies between the position of London and Gibraltar after the European Union referendum. Registered voters in both London and Gibraltar voted for the UK and Gibraltar to remain within the EU.
