First moves in junior chess festival

Almost 100 young chess players made their first moves yesterday at the 6th annual Gibraltar Junior International Chess Festival.

The youngsters travelled from across the globe to compete in this weekend’s tournament, with almost double the number of countries represented compared to last year. Children travelled from countries such as India, America and Israel.

The players eyed their opponents in a game of chess that could last up to three hours. Each move was calculated under the intense eye of adjudicators who ensure the rules of the game are followed.

Minutes passed and although the tournament was well underway for some chess players, others were still deliberating their first move in the strategic game.

With a £12,000 prize fund total up for grabs the children were taking no risks.
