From Gib to Edinburgh for Cancer Research

Cyclist and Cancer Research UK supporter Ken MacEwen pedalled away from the Rock recently as he started his solo challenge of cycling 3000km from Gibraltar to Edinburgh.

The ex PE teacher is 68 years old and aims to raise £30,000 for the charity while completing the challenge in 30 days.

Joining Mr MacEwen across the runway to see him off at the border was keen cyclist and Minister for transport Paul Balban.

Mr MacEwen once lived on the Rock when he was a youngster between 1957 and 1965.

“I found coming back to the Rock a bit surreal as I knew my way about and recognised so many buildings and sites that I remembered from my youth. But so many changes and cars”,” he said.

“It was nice for me to show my son and daughter-in-law about as they had heard me talk about Gibraltar so many times,” he added.

He also said that it “was quite important for me to choose Gibraltar as a starting point for my Cycle to Glasgow as I had so many good memories of my time there.”

Noting that he also managed to meet an old school friend, Jo Santos who he hadn’t seen for 55 years.

Also seeing Mr McEwen off on his challenge was local Giovi Vinales her team from the Gibraltar section of Cancer Research UK. He said they “were fantastic and gave us so much support.”
