Gibraltar Performs Well at World Half Marathon Championships

????????????????????????????????????

Gibraltar’s athletes put in a creditable performance during last week’s World Half Marathon Championships, which were held on a largely picturesque route in Cardiff, Wales.

50 member countries participated in the race with Gibraltar sending an all female team comprising Emma Montiel and Allison Edwards. GBC Sports Personality of the Year, Kim Baglietto was also due to compete, but had to withdraw at the eleventh hour through injury. Gib 3As committee member, Roy Torres, led the team and he was on hand to help sort out any administrative issues and to offer encouragement and support.

The female category of the World Championship Race was the first to be competed for, and Montiel and Edwards lined up with a further 84 female athletes to test themselves over the 21 kilometre course. The start was outside the beautiful Cardiff Castle but conditions were very tough and it was wet and windy.

This didn’t deter from the race, however, and both our athletes recorded season’s best times. Emma Montiel managed 77 position in this world class field, clocking 1 hour, 25 minutes and 51 seconds. Allison Edwards finished 80th in 1.32.08.
