Gorham’s UNESCO site inaugurated today

The official inauguration of the Gorham’s Cave Complex as a UNESCO World Heritage Site will take place today.

The event will take place at the Europa Advance Batteries one and two which will eventually become the main display and interpretation areas from where visitors will be able to view the complex.

The event hosted by the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and Mrs Picardo will be followed by a reception at the University of Gibraltar.

The event has brought to Gibraltar world experts in the field and academics, as well as people who have been involved with the project over the years.

Also present will be UNESCO representatives including the UK National Commissioner for UNESCO, and a former Deputy Director of the World Heritage Centre in Paris.

Professor Chris Stringer from the Natural History Museum, who was involved with Gorham’s Cave when the present project began in 1989, will also be here for the occasion.
