GSD urges Cat 3 upgrade to Victoria Stadium

Shadow Minister for Sport, Edwin Reyes, has urged the Gibraltar Government to reconsider its policy in relation to the Victoria Stadium.

A small upgrade to UEFA Category 3 standard would allow UEFA matches to be played in the stadium, Mr Reyes insisted.

At the moment it has been upgraded very closely to a Category 3 stadium, Mr Reyes said highlighting the Minister for Sport, Steven Linares’ words “a Category 2.8”.

He added that the GSD feels that the Government has never wanted a workable alternative to the Europa Stadium site.

That is why they never upgraded the Victoria Stadium to Category 3, he said.

“If people saw our team playing at the Victoria Stadium, then there would be no demand for a stadium to be built at Europa Point.”

“This is no longer an issue as Europa Point is not going to be built,” Mr Reyes said, adding that it would be a shame if Victoria Stadium is not utilised to its full potential.

“I am sure that world cup matches could also be played at the Victoria Stadium with small upgrades or exemptions from FIFA and I would certainly urge everyone involved to look into this as a matter of priority.”

“Our loyal fans deserve to watch home matches at home,” Mr Reyes said.
