Historic moment at the University of Gibraltar

Chancellor Lord Luce and Vice Chancellor Professor Daniella Tilbury of the University of Gibraltar were formally installed at a ceremony yesterday evening. A procession of academics led by Mayor Adolfo Canepa set the event in motion with Lord Luce and Professor Tilbury dressed in 16th century style robes meant for those in high rank.

“To become the first chancellor of the University of Gibraltar is an enormous honour and privilege,” said Lord Luce.

“I am absolutely delighted to be here for this for occasion and I know what a challenge it is to set up a new university.”

Professor Tilbury in her speech gave a special tribute to her father who died three months ago.

“This is certainly a monumental day for me and for my family, but this day is not about us,” Professor Tilbury said.

“It is a landmark day for the University of Gibraltar.”

The event also saw speeches from Chief Minister Fabian Picardo, Governor Lieutenant General Edward Davis, and Chair of the Board of Governors Jose Julio Pisharello. Master of Ceremonies was Peter Canessa.

Addressing the audience the Chief Minister said the University of Gibraltar expressed the “spirit of innovation, enterprise and learning. It has chosen the image of a lighthouse as its logo, not just because of its proximity to the nearby Trinity lighthouse, but because a lighthouse is primarily a beacon – an enduring symbol of light and understanding.”
