League First Phase Completed

The last matches in the first phase of the GABBA League have been played over the last two weeks. These have confirmed the final ranking, and the starting tables for the second and decisive phase which will determine this season’s First and Second Division Champions.

The First Division looks like a two-horse race between unbeaten leaders Europa Valmar and Lincoln Bayside, but RCA Bricklayers and holders Bavaria Blue Stars should not be underestimated. The Under 18 select, entered as part of its preparation for the summer FIBA competition, have already upset the Bricklayers and, at full strength, are a dangerous opponent. Hercules FC, a newcomer this season, only make the Elite group because Reserves or associated teams are excluded.

Ironically, Hercules Reserves finished 5th in the first phase and start the second phase as leaders of the Challenge group by virtue of their 77-46 win over second placed Bavaria Blue Stars Reserves. This gives them a considerable head-to-head advantage in the event of both teams finishing the competitions equal on points, but it’s early days, and GibYellow Beasts and Bavaria Blue Stars Giants are breathing down their necks and will, no doubt, be challenging for the title.

Lincoln Bayside Reserves have, exceptionally, been allowed to continue in the competition following three non-appearances which, effectively, would have seen the team removed. They will start with zero points.
