Local green groups spur balloon campaign

GONHS, ESG and Lewis Pugh are joining forces in the hope of building a partnership of local organisations to find an alternative to the National Day mass balloon release in Gibraltar.

GONHS has spoken of its delight in recently hosting the UNEP Patron of the Oceans Lewis Pugh and that the National Day Balloon release has been highlighted.

Meanwhile the ESG pledges to “work energetically in 2016 and in partnership with GONHS, Mr Pugh, the SDGG and all others wanting to see real change on this issue.”

“We agree there are several possible and safe alternatives that can truly celebrate our identity and also call upon the community to participate in the search for viable solutions,” the ESG said.

Albert Yome, from GONHS, invited Mr Pugh to the Rock having being an avid follower of the epic swimmer and his environmental awareness campaigns over the years. Mr Yome has been highly involved in GONHS campaign to end the balloon release since 2006.
