In a bid to prepare young athletes for the 2019 Island Games the Gibraltar Sports and Leisure Authority held the ‘Mini-Island Games’ this week.

The three day competition had a particular focus on sports that need more local involvement. It is hoped through this initiative young breakthrough athletes aged around 12 will find their niche and nurture their talent.

The 2019 Island Games will be held on the Rock and the GSLA encourage local involvement.

Children taking part in the mini-island games this week will be receiving their medals at a presentation today.

Sports Development and Training Officer Michelle Turner feels that the Island Games is every much present in the mind of people locally and detailed how the GSLA now have three years to raise the profile of these sports.

“It is about national pride really,” she said.
