New in-flight entertainment system for easyJet passengers

easyJet is to launch its first in-flight entertainment system, the airline has announced.

Travellers will use their own smartphones, tablets and laptops to log on to an on-board system allowing them to watch TV box sets, films, games and audio books for free.

Superhero series Legion and comedy Modern Family will be among the available titles.

The Air Time service is being launched on five easyJet aircraft this autumn, and there are plans to roll it out across the entire fleet.

easyJet has developed the system in partnership with online retailer Rakuten and in-flight entertainment specialist ImmFly.

Airlines have traditionally offered seat-back screens, but asking passengers to use their own devices can reduce weight, meaning less fuel is used. It also cuts maintenance costs.

Similar systems are already in use by rail operator Virgin Trains, coach service National Express and Canadian airline WestJet.

Andrew Middleton, easyJet's ancillary revenue director, said: "Air Time will allow us for the first time to offer customers in-flight entertainment in a way that replicates how they consume their media at home."

He added that that system will be created in a way that allows cabin crew to "continue conducting an excellent standard of safety-focused service and on-board hospitality".
