Seaweed returns to plague Western Beach

Chiringuito Matthew on Western Beach shut up shop for the day yesterday at 1.30pm, an indication of what may come with its owner Clive Chichon predicting a permanent closure due to a ‘forkweed’ seaweed epidemic besieging the area.

“My business is going down, I may have to close my business,” said Mr Chichon.

“It’s been bad for a full month,” he added.

The businessman is also paying the Chiringuito’s running costs out of his own pocket such is the hit the establishment has taken.

The seaweed has returned to Gibraltar’s shoreline and the amount accumulated over the past four days stands in huge piles along the waterfront at Western Beach.
